Grade 3 Science - writing plants/soils trivia cards
To help review for the science test on plants and soils, each Grade 3 students wrote one question on a cue card, and included the answer to the question. The questions were read aloud to the class to help review their science knowledge before the plants/soils test. The questions were in the form of true/false, multiple choice or a question (i.e., why, what, where, when, who, how). Click on the photo to see an enlarged view. (June 23, 2013)
Grade 3 - Soils in the environment experiment
The Grade 3's conducted an experiment to examine the composition of soil. The students investigated how much water different types of soil (i.e., clay, loam, sand) will hold (photo below, top middle, top right). They recorded their observations in their science folder. The purpose of this experiment was to find out which type of soil would be best for growing plants. (June 14, 2013)
Final end of unit task - Growth and changes in plants
These students have finished making their picture of a plant with plasticine, and writing about the function of each plant part (flower, stem, leaf, root). Click on the upper left corner or upper right corner to see the slide show of the Grade 3's work. (June 12, 2013)
Getting information from a media source
The Grade 3's are learning more about plants from a video. (June 11, 2013)
Grade 3 Science - Final task for Growth and Changes in Plants, and Soils in the Environment
The students have been working on their plasticine picture of the parts of a plant, they then used their science folder to write about (photos below) all the parts of a plant and the function of each part. The students used a criteria to remind them how to show their best science thinking (first photo, top left), as was discussed during their lesson. (June 10, 2013)
Grade 3 Science - Final task
The Grade 3's have made plasticine pictures (photos below), showing the parts of a plant. The students have discussed the success criteria (first photo, top left corner) of their picture showing the parts of a plant. They first watched a video of author/illustrator Barbara Reid making her plasticine illustrations for her many children's books. After sketching (middle photo top row) their picture, the students made their plasticine picture onto file folders. Some of the students had sore fingers from pressing all that plasticine! (June 7, 2013)
Grade 3 Science - Growth and Changes in Plants
The Grade 3's are conducting an experiment using a stalk of celery and water that contains a few drop of food colouring. The students recorded and drew their observations and made predictions of what they will notice about the celery and the water level when they look at the celery in the container during the next science class. (June 4, 2013)
Grade 3 Science - Soils in the Environment
The Grade examined the contents of a soil sample, then drew and wrote about their observations. (June 4, 2013)
Grade 3 Science - Growth and Changes in Plants and
Soils in the Environment
After taking one of the plants out of its small container the Grade 3's examined the parts of a plant. Then the plant was placed in a larger pot. (June 4, 2013)
Grade 3 Science - Growth and Changes in Plants and
Soils in the Envrironment
The Grade 3's looked at three different plants. The three plants showed the different stages in a plant's life cycle. (June 4, 2013)
Grade 2
Understanding Life Systems - Growth and Changes in Animals
This Science unit will encourage students to understand the Big Ideas:
Animals have distinct characteristics.
Humans are animals.
There are similarities and differences among different kinds of animals.
Humans need to protect animals and the places where they live.
OVERALL EXPECTATIONS
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
1. assess ways in which animals have an impact on society and the environment, and ways in which humans have an impact upon animals and the places where they live;
2. investigate similarities and differences in the characteristics of various animals;
3. demonstrate an understanding that animals grow and change and have distinct characteristics
Grade 2
Understanding Structures and Mechanisms - Movement
This Science unit will encourage students to understand the Big Ideas:
Movement is a change in position of an object.
Simple machines help objects to move.
Mechanisms are made up of one or more simple machines.
Simple machines and mechanisms make life easier and/or more enjoyable for humans.
OVERALL EXPECTATIONS
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
1. assess the impact on society and the environment of simple machines and mechanisms;
2. investigate mechanisms that include simple machines and enable movement;
